Fighting Against God

Fighting Against God

Acts 5:17-41 speaks of the imprisonment of the apostles. The council insisted they stop teaching about Jesus. Peter responds with the words, “We ought to obey God rather than man” (v.29). One of the men of the council, Gamaliel, stood up and said, “Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown; but if it is of God, ye will not be able to overthrow them;  lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against God.” (v.38,39).

Man takes pride in the battles he has fought and won. People who have always won seem to think nothing can defeat them. There is nothing they cannot oppose and win. Do you feel the same way about God?  Is your way better than God’s?  Has your means of defense (Ephesians 6:12) conquered the armies of God? Can you retreat from accountability and escape without punishment? Can you beat God to the future? If you are you racing against time – God holds all time in His hand?

Hebrews 12:25-29 points to several facts about God, which make fighting Him like swinging in the wind. We are admonished not to “refuse him that speaketh” (v.25). In the days of old, they were not able to escape His warnings and neither can we. Nothing we do can shake the foundation of His kingdom. No man-made army or self-centeredness of man will shake the kingdom God has established by Jesus Christ. It will stand forever.

What can you do about a power stronger than yours? How about the power to save (Romans 1:16)? What about a power others think foolish but is still stronger than man (1 Corinthians 1:18-25)? How about a power which at all times is successful against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:10,11)? You and I have no other recourse than to inquire about a means of peace. We should bend our knees and bow our heads and say, “What wilt thou have me to do?” so peace will abound. Romans 5:1 says, “Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”. This peace saves us from the wrath of God (v.9). Like Paul, instead of fighting against God, we begin to fight for God. May we never forget God does not let us fight alone. Nothing will defeat us as long as He is on our side (Romans 8:31-39)…
