The Common Cold of the Soul
…to the sinful patterns of behavior that never got confronted and changed.
…to abilities and gifts that were never cultivated and deployed to help others.
Until weeks became months.
And months turned into years,
And one day you’re looking back on a life of
Deep intimate gut wrenching honest conversations you never had;
Great bold prayers you never prayed,
Exhilarating risks you never took,
Lives you never touched,
And…you’re sitting in a recliner with a shriveled soul,
And forgotten dreams,
And…you realize there was a world of desperate need,
And a great God calling you to be a part of something bigger than yourself—
You see the person you could have become but did not;
You never opened the gift.
I don’t know Greg Levoy but he nailed it. I wonder…how many people go through their entire life and never open the Gift. God is the gift-giver. For example, He gives you the gift of your mind, your material possessions, and your talents—and packages them all in the present of the present. Have you opened His gifts and shared them with others or have you left them to collect dust on the shelf?
Julie and I sat on the patio yesterday morning and admired the new Hibiscus plant we purchased the day before. The beautiful flower that caught our eye and was in full bloom had withered. However, we watched in complete amazement as the sun began to shine and two new flowers opened to their full extent in the space of a single hour.
It reminded me of the old adage, “Bloom where you are planted.” God
has planted us here in this little place on His planet. We can trudge
along like most people (and slowly wither away) or we can decide to
bloom to His glory. My brother or sister, you have potential. You have
been gifted. Open the gift and bloom! Do it now…
